Dear Councilman Boyce:

As City Council President, I appreciate your many years of service to the city of Kent. It is evident that you care deeply about the welfare of Kent and its citizens. It is also clear that you welcome the chance to hear and review any issue that is critical to the well-being of your city. It is with pleasure and confidence that I submit for your consideration a proposal to provide a computer lab for the South Side library branch.

A library plays a vital part in the community by providing services and valuable information to the residents. Because the South Side branch does not offer a public computer lab, it is missing out on a chance to positively impact the people who rely upon it. Today’s modern society depends upon easy access to information the internet provides, as well as the advantages a connected community can receive.

These offerings start with helpful resources for low-income families, which include access to education and health information. They continue with advantages for the community at large. Pre-kindergarten children benefit from early learning which increases their chance for a successful education. Teenagers in high school have resources to help with their homework. The time spent on researching colleges is reduced, along with the application process thereby increasing the chance a student will apply. The educational benefits continue as computer access provides preparatory studies for obtaining a G.E.D. which will help improve an individual or families standard of living.

Businesses in Kent are also positively affected. Many small businesses leverage the technology and information a library has to enter the market. A technologically connected library provides a young company with databases that contain market research and demographic analysis to help them better understand their customer base and make smarter decisions.

I am sure you will see the benefits providing the South Side library branch with a public computer lab will bring.

Sincerely,

David Morris
